Master Thesis – Full Time – Munich (Forschungszentrum Garching)

THE MISSION

We want to Enable economical quantum tech products for disruptive applications and accelerate the second quantum revolution and the world´s transition to sustainable quantum technologies.

Your task will be to work on developing and fabricating optimized pixel array designs for highly efficient and fast SSPDs (e.g. used for QKD). Your responsibilities will include the setting up and optimization of contact pad design, fabrication of devices for testing (using advanced nanofabrication techniques) and measuring the electrical characteristics of the detector arrays. The work is used as predevelopment for future product that utilize multipixel detectors for improved detector performance. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, independent thinker, and interested in Quantum Technolgies. This position is full-time and needs to be based in Munich (Forschungszentrum Garching).

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • You will start by investigating the designs used for multipixel SSPD detectors in literature and prepare an overview highlighting the pros and cons of each approach.
  • You will then design, simulate and fabricate SSPD multipixel detectors and test structures based on previous developments in our team, starting from the best approach identified in the previous step
  • You will perform analysis of the multipixel detectors via different electrical and structural characterization techniques to optimize the layout of the pixel array based on your results
  • You will further perform the electrical characterization of samples in several cryostat setups to measure the detector performance

RELEVANT SKILLS

We value a creative mindset and a go-getter attitude. Hard skills can always be learned. That being said, we are searching for someone with:

  • University background in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanoscience or similar.
  • Understanding of quantum sensors and technologies
  • Knowledge about superconductivity and nanoscale devices
  • Familiarity with nanofabrciation techniques (EBL, RIE, Optical Lithography, Evaporation etc.)
  • Practical  Experience with electrical characterization setups in cryogenic envirnoments
  • Strong communication skills: Fluent in English, German is a plus.
  • High motivation and commitment
